What Is Dried Fig?

Dried Fig (Wu Hua Guo, 无花果) — whose name means "fruit without flower" in Chinese, reflecting the hidden flowers inside the fig — is a gentle, nourishing food-herb that has been used in Chinese medicine since the Ming Dynasty. Its sweet, mild nature makes it one of the most approachable medicinal foods, suitable for people of all ages.

Sweet and neutral in nature, Dried Fig enters the Lung, Spleen, and Large Intestine channels. It moistens the Lung to relieve dry cough, soothes and clears heat from the throat, strengthens the Spleen, and lubricates the Large Intestine for gentle, comfortable bowel movement. It is a favourite ingredient in Cantonese herbal soups, particularly in autumn and winter formulas for respiratory dryness.

History & Origin

The fig (Wu Hua Guo, the flowerless fruit) travelled to China along the Silk Road from the Middle East and Central Asia, and was adopted as a sweet, moistening fruit that benefits the Lungs, Stomach, and intestines.

Tang to Song Dynasties
Introduced to China via the Silk Road from Persia and the Mediterranean and cultivated in temple and household gardens.
Ming Dynasty (1368 to 1644 CE)
Li Shizhen's Bencao Gangmu recorded the fig as a sweet, neutral fruit that aids digestion, moistens the intestines, and clears Heat from the throat.
Qing to Modern Era
Became popular in southern Chinese soups for moistening the Lungs and easing dry cough and constipation.
Modern Research
Rich in fibre, polyphenols, and enzymes, supporting digestion, the throat, and antioxidant defence.
