What Is ChuanXiong?

ChuanXiong (Chuan Xiong, 川芎) is one of the most important blood-invigorating herbs in all of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The dried rhizome of Ligusticum striatum — named for the Chuan (Sichuan) province where the finest specimens are cultivated — is aromatic, pungent, and warming, with a powerful ability to move stagnant Qi and Blood.

Pungent and warm in nature, ChuanXiong enters the Liver, Gallbladder, and Pericardium channels. It invigorates Blood, moves Qi, dispels Wind, and relieves pain — earning it the classical description as "the foremost herb to move Blood and Qi." It is a key ingredient in Si Wu Tang (Four Substance Decoction), the foundational Blood-nourishing formula of TCM, and appears in countless formulas for headache, menstrual disorders, and pain from Blood stasis.

History & Origin

Chuan Xiong, the rhizome of Sichuan lovage, is a premier Blood-invigorating and Qi-moving herb, famed for treating headaches and gynaecological complaints for nearly two millennia.

Han Dynasty (206 BCE to 220 CE)
Recorded in the Shennong Bencao Jing as Xiong Qiong, used to move Blood and dispel Wind.
Tang Dynasty (618 to 907 CE)
Sun Simiao's formulas employed it for headaches, irregular menstruation, and pain from Blood stasis.
Song Dynasty (960 to 1279 CE)
The Sichuan-grown variety became prized and featured in famous formulas such as Chuanxiong Chatiao San for Wind headaches.
Ming Dynasty (1368 to 1644 CE)
Li Shizhen's Bencao Gangmu described it as the Qi within the Blood, moving Blood while regulating Qi.
Modern Era
Tetramethylpyrazine (ligustrazine) and ferulic acid are studied for cerebrovascular, circulatory, and analgesic effects.

Regulates Menstruation

Moves Blood in the Chong and Ren channels to regulate irregular, painful, or absent menstruation from Blood stasis or Qi stagnation.

Relieves Wind-Damp Pain
