What Is Dried Ginger?

Dried Ginger (Gan Jiang, 干姜) is the mature, dried rhizome of Zingiber officinale — distinct from fresh ginger (Sheng Jiang) in both its therapeutic intensity and specific actions. While fresh ginger disperses cold from the exterior, Dried Ginger is far more powerful, acting deep within the interior to warm the Spleen and Stomach, expel cold, and revive Yang.

Pungent and hot in nature, Dried Ginger enters the Heart, Lung, Spleen, and Stomach channels with forceful warming power. It is one of the principal interior-warming herbs in TCM, used to address cold deep in the middle burner (Spleen and Stomach) and even to rescue devastated Yang in emergency patterns. In clinical practice, it forms the core of classical cold-warming formulas including Li Zhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) and Fu Zi Li Zhong Tang.

History & Origin

Dried Ginger (Gan Jiang) is one of the most important interior-warming herbs in Chinese medicine, used for nearly two millennia to warm the Spleen and Stomach and rescue collapsed Yang.

Han Dynasty (206 BCE to 220 CE)
A core herb of Zhang Zhongjing's Shanghan Lun, central to formulas that warm the middle and restore Yang such as Li Zhong Wan.
Tang Dynasty (618 to 907 CE)
Sun Simiao's formularies used it for cold abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhoea.
Song Dynasty (960 to 1279 CE)
Codified for warming Cold patterns and as a guiding herb in many tonic formulas.
Ming Dynasty (1368 to 1644 CE)
Li Shizhen's Bencao Gangmu distinguished fresh ginger (Sheng Jiang) from dried (Gan Jiang) and detailed their warming actions.
Modern Era
Gingerols and shogaols are studied for anti-nausea, digestive, anti-inflammatory, and circulatory effects.

Traditional Uses

Warms the Middle & Expels Cold

The primary action — warms the Spleen and Stomach to expel deep interior cold, used for cold abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhoea from Cold in the middle burner.

Revives Yang & Rescues Devastated Yang

In emergency patterns of Yang collapse (cold extremities, faint pulse, profuse cold sweating), Dried Ginger is combined with Aconite to revive failing Yang.

Warms the Lung & Transforms Phlegm

Warms the Lung to transform Cold-Phlegm and resolve thin, watery phlegm from Lung Cold — used for chronic cough with clear, copious sputum.

Stops Bleeding from Cold

Processed to a charred form (Pao Jiang), used to stop bleeding associated with Cold-type deficiency — particularly uterine bleeding, haemorrhage, and post-partum bleeding.

Relieves Cold-Type Vomiting & Nausea

Warms the Stomach to stop vomiting from Cold invasion or Stomach Yang deficiency — a key herb in anti-nausea and vomiting formulas with a cold aetiology.

Supports Circulation in Cold Patterns

Its powerful warming action drives Yang Qi through the channels to warm the extremities and support circulation blocked by cold.
